Colorbond Fence Repair Melbourne

Colorbond does not rot, warp or get eaten, which is why people buy it. It dents, it can rust where it was cut, its sheets blow out of their rails in a big wind, and its colour range changes every few years, so a repair in the wrong shade is worse than the dent. This page is about the four ways a steel fence needs repair, why they are almost always sheet-by-sheet jobs rather than run jobs, and how the colour match is done when the fence is older than the current range.

How a steel fence fails, and why the fix is usually one sheet

A Colorbond fence is a set of steel sheets slotted into a top and bottom rail between posts. The sheets carry no load; the rails and posts do. That is what makes it so repairable: a dented, holed or rusted sheet is lifted out of its rails and a new one dropped in, without touching the sheets beside it. The problems come in four kinds. Dents and holes from a vehicle, a mower or a falling branch are cosmetic unless the sheet is creased through, and a creased sheet is replaced rather than beaten out. Edge rust appears where a sheet was cut on site and the cut edge was never sealed; it creeps in from the edge and lifts the paint. Caught early it is cut back and sealed; left, the sheet is replaced. Blown-out sheets are a wind problem, usually where the rail clips were never fitted or the fence is a wind zone the rails were not specified for, and the fix is refitting with clips or a heavier rail. And rusted or dropped rails and post caps, which let water into the posts, are replaced as parts. The one thing that is not a sheet job is colour: a fence in a colour BlueScope no longer makes cannot be matched exactly, and the honest options are a nearest current match or replacing the whole visible face.

How We Repair

How a Colorbond repair goes

Identify the colour and the sheet profile, fence repair installation step 11
Site visit · 20min

Identify the colour and the sheet profile

We confirm the colour name, whether it is current, and the sheet profile, because BlueScope makes several and they do not interchange.

Sheet, rail or run, in writing

The quote lists each sheet to replace, any rail or cap, and the colour match. If the colour is discontinued, the nearest-match sample is shown against the fence.

Sheets and parts ordered

Current colours in the standard profile are often in stock. Metallic and matt finishes, and unusual profiles, are ordered.

Lift out, drop in, clip, fence repair installation step 44
Half a day

Lift out, drop in, clip

The damaged sheet is lifted out of its rails, the new one slotted in, and rail clips fitted so it cannot blow out again. Rails and caps are swapped as parts.

Seal and check the run, fence repair installation step 55

Seal and check the run

Any cut edge is sealed and touched up in the matched colour. We sight along the run for other sheets starting to rust at the edges and tell you.

The Difference

We match the colour before we order the sheet.

A Colorbond repair is only invisible if the colour is right. We identify the colour and the profile first, show you the sample against your fence, and tell you plainly when a discontinued colour cannot be matched.

Yes. The sheets carry no load; they slot into the rails. A damaged sheet is lifted out and a new one dropped in without disturbing the ones either side. Most Colorbond repairs are one to three sheets.
