Glass Pool Fencing
Melbourne
Frameless and semi-frameless glass that keeps the view and passes the barrier. 12mm toughened glass, 2205 duplex spigots, and the compliance certificate lodged for you.
Frameless or semi-frameless is a look-and-budget decision. Both pass.
People arrive at glass having already decided it is beautiful and then discover there are two of them at very different prices. The difference is structural: frameless panels stand alone on spigots, so the glass has to be thick enough to resist wind on its own; semi-frameless clamps between posts that take the load, so the glass can be thinner and the footings simpler. Everything about compliance is identical. What changes is the sight line, the price and how the system copes with a slope.

What is specific to a glass barrier
Tap through each requirement to see it on the barrier, then tick the ones your pool already meets. This is the sequence a registered inspector follows, offered as general guidance.
The barrier must measure at least 1200mm from the finished ground or paving to the top of the fence. Every low point around the pool is measured, so a garden bed or retaining wall can quietly drop you under.
Guidance only, current at time of writing. The standard that applies depends on when your pool was built. Confirm the current requirements with your council and a registered inspector; the full rules are on our Victorian pool regulations page.
Every option below meets the standard. The difference is the look.

12mm panels on pairs of duplex spigots core-drilled into the slab. No posts, no top rail. The look most people mean when they say glass pool fence.

The numbers behind a compliant barrier
Every barrier is engineered to AS 1926.1-2012 and installed with marine-grade hardware. This is the drawing an inspector reads.

Gate and standard
Glass is certified on the same four-year clock as any barrier
The system you choose changes the look and the price, not the paperwork. A glass barrier moves through the same four stages as tubular aluminium, with one difference worth diarising: hydraulic gate hinges lose tension over four years, and that is what a re-inspection usually catches.
Register
The pool or spa is registered with your council, which records the barrier standard that applies from its build date.
Certify the glass
A registered inspector checks the barrier. Glass rarely fails on the panels; it fails on the gate hinges and on what has been placed beside it.
Lodge in 30 days
The certificate of barrier compliance is lodged with council within 30 days of the inspection.
Re-tension and re-certify
Hydraulic hinges lose tension over years. We re-set them before the four-year re-certification so the gate still self-closes.
Installation Journey

Levels, substrate and system choice
We shoot levels, probe the slab, and confirm whether your surround suits spigots, a channel or posts.
Glass ordered to the measured opening
Panels are toughened to size and cannot be cut afterwards, so the measure is done before anything is ordered.
Spigots or posts set
Spigots core-drilled and grouted into structural concrete, or posts footed, then left to cure before glass goes on.
Glass, gate and certificate
Panels set and gapped, gate hung and its hinge tension set, then a registered inspector signs off and we lodge the certificate.
Glass is easy to sell and easy to get wrong.
Anyone can order toughened panels. The difference is the hardware grade, whether the slab underneath was ever structural, and whether the certificate actually gets lodged.
2205 duplex, not 316
Duplex spigots resist the chloride pitting that dulls and weakens ordinary marine grades around a pool.
We probe the slab first
If the paving sits on sand or a thin screed, we cast a footing or switch system rather than drill into nothing.
Both systems quoted side by side
Every frameless quote shows the semi-frameless figure beside it, so the saving is a number rather than a guess.
Certificate lodged, not handed over
We book the registered inspector and lodge the certificate with council. You do not chase it.

Still have questions? Call usFrameless if the fence is a feature you will look at, semi-frameless if it is a boundary you will look past. Frameless is 12mm glass on spigots with no posts and typically costs a little more. Semi-frameless clamps 10mm glass between slim posts and copes better with slopes and decking. Both meet the same standard.
