Semi-Frameless Glass Pool Fencing Melbourne

Semi-frameless puts a slim post between each panel of glass. The posts carry the load, so the glass can drop from 12mm to 10mm, the fixings get simpler, and the rate per metre comes down. You give up the uninterrupted sight line of frameless and gain a barrier that is easier to build on awkward ground and cheaper to repair. This page is about that trade.

What the posts change, and what they don't

With frameless glass, each panel stands on its own and the spigots do all the structural work. With semi-frameless, the panel is clamped into a post on either side, so the load path runs down the posts into their footings and the glass only has to resist impact, not wind. That is why 10mm is enough here where 12mm is needed for frameless. It also means the footings are ordinary post holes rather than core-drilled spigots, which is what makes semi-frameless workable on decking, on pavers over sand, and on sloped ground where stepping a run of spigots gets fiddly. What does not change is compliance. The same 1200mm height, 900mm non-climbable zone, 100mm gaps and self-closing gate apply, and the inspector checks them the same way.

Glass
10mm toughened Grade A safety glass to AS/NZS 2208. 12mm is available if you want the extra stiffness on a windy site.
Posts
40mm slimline or 50mm standard aluminium, or 50mm stainless. Posts at each panel join, footed in concrete or bolted to a structural bearer.
Post finish
Powder-coated in the Colorbond® range (satin black is the Melbourne favourite), satin or clear anodised, or polished stainless.
Glass clamps
Two clamps per post edge, rubber-lined, so the glass is held without point loading. No holes through the glass.
Gate
A glass gate hung on a post, self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release at about 1500mm.

This page is general guidance, not legal advice. Pool barrier rules in Victoria depend on when your pool was built and are set by your council. Always confirm the requirements that apply to your property with a VBA or Building and Plumbing Commission registered inspector before you rely on anything here.

The Part That Matters

You are buying a post every 1.2 to 1.5 metres. Decide what that post is worth to you.

From across the yard, a black 40mm post between panels of glass mostly disappears. Standing at the pool edge, you see it. Whether that matters depends on what the fence is for: a boundary you look past, or a feature you look at. Semi-frameless is the right answer for the first and often the wrong answer for the second, and no amount of polish on the post changes that.

What the inspector looks at on a post-and-panel barrier

Tap through each requirement to see it on the barrier, then tick the ones your pool already meets. This is the sequence a registered inspector follows, offered as general guidance.

The barrier must measure at least 1200mm from the finished ground or paving to the top of the fence. Every low point around the pool is measured, so a garden bed or retaining wall can quietly drop you under.

Compliance is not a one-off, it runs on a cycle

Under Victoria's pool and spa barrier laws, every owner typically moves through the same four stages. We handle the parts that need a registered inspector. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

01
Owner

Register the pool

Every Victorian pool or spa is registered with council. We give you the barrier details the form asks for.

02
We handle

Inspect the posts and gate

A registered inspector checks post heights, clamp positions, gaps and the gate. On semi-frameless the clamps are the thing to get right.

03
We handle

Lodge the certificate

The certificate of barrier compliance goes to council within 30 days of the inspection.

04
Every 4 yrs

Re-certify

Before the four-year re-inspection we check post plumb and clamp torque, which is where a post system drifts.

After 4 years the cycle typically repeats, a fresh inspection and re-lodged certificate. We track the date so you do not have to.
How We Build

Pool fence installation process

1 to 2 days

Certificate lodged the moment the inspector signs off.
STEP 01

Levels and post layout

We shoot levels and set post positions so panel widths are even and the gaps land on flat paving. On a slope, each post gets its own height.

STEP 02

Registration and permits

Council registration and any permit are confirmed before glass is ordered to size.

STEP 03

Footings and posts

Posts are set in concrete post holes, or plated to a bearer on decking, plumbed in two planes and left to cure.

STEP 04

Clamp and gap the glass

Panels are clamped between posts with rubber-lined fittings, gapped at or under 100mm, and the gate is hung to open outward.

STEP 05

Inspection and certificate

A registered inspector signs the barrier off and we lodge the certificate. You get the CPR sign and a clamp-check note at handover.

Why Choose Us

We will tell you when semi-frameless is the wrong call.

Most of the time it is the right one, and it saves you real money. But if the fence is the feature of the yard, a post every panel will bother you every day, and we would rather say so at the quote than hear it at handover.

Straight comparison

Every semi-frameless quote shows the frameless figure beside it, so the saving is a number, not a guess.

Slimline as standard

We quote 40mm posts unless the site needs 50mm. The narrower post is most of the visual difference.

Clamps kept out of the zone

Low-profile clamps oriented inward, so the non-climbable zone is not undone by the fixings.

Panel-by-panel repair

A broken panel is replaced on its own. That is the quiet advantage of a post system over spigots.

Meaningfully cheaper. Thinner glass and simpler footings are where the saving comes from. We show both figures side by side on your quote so the saving is a number, not a guess.
