Aluminium Slat Fencing Melbourne
A slat fence is a set of horizontal blades with a gap between them, and every decision on it comes back to three numbers: how wide the blade, how wide the gap, and how tall the run. Change any one and the privacy, the wind load, the blade count and the price all move together. This page is those decisions by what the fence is for, a pool surround, a side boundary, a street front, a carport screen, rather than by millimetre, and an honest account of where aluminium slat is the right answer over timber and where it is not.
Blade, gap, orientation: the three slat decisions
The blade width sets the character of the fence before the gap does. A 65mm blade reads as fine lines and needs more blades and more fixings per metre; 90mm is the residential standard and the best balance of look and cost; 120mm reads as boards and suits a long wall or a commercial frontage. The gap then sets privacy and airflow, and because a slat fence is priced by the blade, the gap sets the price too: closing a 30mm gap to 10mm on 90mm blades adds a fifth more blades to every metre. Orientation is the last choice and mostly a design one. Horizontal is the modern default and stretches a short run; vertical suits a tall narrow gap, a side return or a gate, and is the only orientation that works on a steep slope without stepping. What makes an aluminium slat fence look expensive is not the metal, it is the fixings: a clip system that holds every blade from behind so the face is unbroken, and posts and rails powder-coated to the same colour so the frame disappears.
The right gap for what the fence is for
Nobody wants a 30mm gap; they want privacy from the side neighbour, or breeze on a north-facing deck, or a screen the street can see through. Pick what the fence is doing and the gap follows. These screening figures are indicative, not measured.
Balanced
The value pick. The best privacy per dollar a slat fence offers.
Air passes through, so standard posts and footings.
Screens the side of the house from the footpath without walling the yard in. Melbourne's most-chosen gap.
Want a solid wall for the least money? That is Colorbond®, not slat.
Closing the gap to nothing makes aluminium slat the most expensive way to build a solid fence, and it loads the footings as if it were one. A Colorbond® fence gives full privacy for roughly half the price. We fit both and we will tell you which your boundary actually needs.
Screening percentages are indicative estimates for straight-on viewing and vary with blade width, angle and height. Wind-load and footing requirements are confirmed on site against AS/NZS 1170.2. Colorbond® and Dulux® are trademarks of their respective owners.

Compliance & assurance
Your installation, in five stages
1Blade, gap and orientation on site
Samples in each blade width against your wall. We set the gap with a spacer for what the fence is for and note the wind exposure.
2Quote by blade count
Blades, posts, clip rail and gate itemised. Because the gap sets the blade count, changing it changes the quote, and we show by how much.
3Fabricated to your run
Blades cut and powder-coated in your colour, posts and clip rails to match. Nothing is painted on site.
4Posts, rails, blades by jig
Posts set in concrete and left to cure. Clip rails fixed level, then blades snapped in from the bottom up with a spacer at every fixing so the gap is identical end to end.
5Gate, check, hand over
A matched slat gate on a self-closing hinge if it is a pool. The run sighted from both ends. Ten years on the workmanship.
